
Biography
Guy Sioui Durand is Wendat (Huron) from Wendake near Quebec city (Quebec). He circulate in the contemporary art field as a sociologist (Ph.D.), an art criticism and as an independant curator (www.siouidurand.org).
Since the beginning of the new millenarium (2000-2008), Sioui Durand is present on local and international art events, especially in Canada. In 2008, he participate to Fiction, a Native Art residency at the Banff Centre (january/february). In May, he was on the panel discussing new approach for Aboriginal Museology at the international colloquium Creative Construction in Ottawa. Selected to be part of the Native curator team’s for a journey at Sydney Biennal in June, Sioui Durand declined because of his intense implication as artistic director to create a Indian art programmation for Espace 400e during the festivity of Quebec City foundation 1608-2008 (june/september). Both in 2007 in Saskatoon and in 2006 in Winnipeg, he was there for the two first ACC/CCA colloquium. This fall, he is teaching (« chargé de cours ») Regards théoriques sur l’art actuel at the Art department of Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Guy Sioui Durand is invited to the Teorical Forum at the X’ Habana Biennale in march 2009. Finally, Sioui Durand also prepare a special issue of Inter, Art actuel magazine about Urban Native Art today in Canada for 2009.
Indian Art and Mass Culture
At the Open Session, I intend to present and discuss the political and artistic impact of some creations of the Aboriginal artistic programmation : Aimititau/spoken words, Zacharie Vincent « Tehariolin » and his friends/ public photo/installation, Harangues/performances, The Cross/Land art) in the context of big festivity during Quebec 1608-2008.
I also will try to make contacts for the special issue about Urban Native Art in Canada for Inter magazine (2009).
